NEW ULM BEATS ALEXANDRIA, 5-2, FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

New Ulm owned the first period, scoring two goals for an early 2-0 lead. The goals were netted by Ryan Smith and Jack Parks.

New Ulm was able to hold on to the two-goal lead until Brenden Payne, assisted by Alec Skar and Logan Sanborn, scored for Alexandria at 15:40 of the second period.

New Ulm was in a good position, leading 2-1 and on the power play with three minutes remaining in the second period. Unfortunately, Alexandria’s Josiah Roen  netted a short-handed goal to ultimately start the third period tied at 2-2.

Smith buried his second goal of the night at 8:13 of the third period to break the tie and put New Ulm up 3-2.

Alex Nagel, with assists from Brandon Mehlhop and Kirk Coppock, netted one a minute later to make the score 4-2.

Coppock added a fifth goal, on the power play, with 1:18 left in the game. Tom Reilly and Nagel were credited with the assists.

Jimmy Miller, Luc Kreuser, Trevor Woytcke and Steven Mordini contributed one assist each for New Ulm.

Ryan Bielenberg faced 27 shots and made 25 saves for New Ulm. Alexandria’s goaltender Kyle Hayden stopped 36 of the 41 shots he faced.

New Ulm totaled eight penalty minutes on four infractions and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Alexandria had a total of 12 penalty minutes on six infractions and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
