The New Ulm Steel achieved redemption, winning 6-1, against the Breezy Point North Stars to split the series. New Ulm had 11 players register points and outshot Breezy Point 45-36.
Andrew Pitleck opened the scoring at 2:27 of the first period. This was Pitleck’s first goal with New Ulm, in his first game and on his first shift.
New Ulm scored five unanswered goals in the remainder of the game. Jimmy Miller’s short-handed tally and Kirk Coppock’s power-play goal left Breezy Point trailing 3-1 to start the second period. Tom Reilly, Trevor Woytcke and Steven Mordini each netted one in the second period.
Ryan Kenny faced 36 shots and made 35 saves for New Ulm. Breezy Point’s starting goaltender, Lucas Ehrlich, stopped 27 of the 33 shots he faced. Ehrlich was replaced by Micah Hershey at the 10:53 mark of the second period with New Ulm leading 6-1. Hershey made 12 saves, stopping every shot New Ulm generated.
New Ulm totaled 14 penalty minutes on seven infractions and went 2-for-5 on the power play. Breezy Point had a total of 12 penalty minutes on six infractions and went 0-for-5 on the power play.
