NEW ULM FINISHES SECOND IN WEST DIVISION WITH 5-1 LOSS TO NORTH IOWA

The New Ulm Steel had to either win or force the game into overtime to take take the first place position in the West Division. New Ulm failed to do so and ended up with the same amount of points as the Granite City Lumberjacks. In the event of tie breaker, the winner is decided by total wins. New Ulm ended the regular season with a 5-2-1 record against Granite City, but they had three more wins than New Ulm.

New Ulm had a 1-0 lead on the North Iowa Bulls with a goal from Zach Heiser at 12:49 of the first period. Shane Bernhardson tied the game up at 1-1 with exactly one minute remaining in the first period.

Dayton Honkanen gave North Iowa a 2-1 lead in the second period. Dan Sandvig and Bernhardson extended North Iowa’s lead to 4-1 with a pair of power-play goals in the third period. Matt Dahlseide scored on the empty net simultaneously with the final horn for a final score of, 5-1.

Ryan Kenny stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced for New Ulm. North Iowa’s goaltender Colin Cain faced 29 shots and made 28 saves.

New Ulm totaled eight penalty minutes on four infractions and went 0-for-5 on the power play. North Iowa had a total of 10 penalty minutes on five infractions and went 2-for-4 on the power play.
