NEW ULM ELIMINATES ALEXANDRIA, MOVES ON TO WEST DIVISION FINALS

The first round of playoffs is complete and the New Ulm Steel and the Granite City Lumberjacks are moving on to the West Division Finals next weekend. New Ulm took the Alexandria Blizzard to a game three where they shut them out, 5-0, after a game one, 6-2, loss. Granite City swept the Willmar WarHawks beating them, 4-1, and, 9-3.

Game one of the West Division Finals will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 23 at Sports Arena East. Game two will be at 7:10 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at Sleepy Eye Arena. If necessary, game three will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 25 at Sports Arena East.

In game one of the West Division Semi-Finals, New Ulm suffered a disappointing 6-2 loss to Alexandria. The shots were almost even at 35-34. New Ulm’s two goals were scored by Ryan Smith on the power play and Trevor Woytcke, both in the second period. Box Score

New Ulm came out strong in Alexandria for game two. Through the first two periods, New Ulm had a 3-0 lead with goals from Smith, Alex Nagel and Jimmy Miller. Logan Nelson got Alexandria on the board in the third period. Smith added a power-play goal for New Ulm to make the final score 4-1. Box Score

New Ulm shut out Alexandria 5-0 in game three. Ryan Kenny recorded his fifth shutout of the season with 38 saves. Oliver Hoeschen, Luc Kreuser, Zach Heiser, Tom Reilly and Miller each scored one goal. Alexandria’s starting goaltender Brady Meyers was pulled after New Ulm’s fifth goal in the second period after making 13 saves on 18 shots. Kyle Hayden replaced Meyers in net and made 10 saves on the 10 shots he faced. Box Score
