Alex Nagel scored two goals in the third period to give New Ulm a 3-1 lead. Willmar’s Alex Syring scored with 2:05 remaining in the third to cut New Ulm’s lead to 3-2. Willmar was unable to tie it up and New Ulm took the 3-2 win. Shots were 40-28 in favor of Willmar.
Nicholas Campbell opened the scoring at 12:56 into the first period with assists from Tim O’Connor and Cory Martinez. Orlando Scherz also helped New Ulm reach the win assisting on both of the Nagel goals.
New Ulm started the second period up 1-0. Willmar dominated the second period generating 20 shots on goal. Willmar’s Jacob Dobberstein scored a power play goal at 14:56 into the second period to tie it up 1-1.
Nathan Siclovan had an incredible night in goal. Siclovan stopped 38 of the 40 shots he faced allowing one power play goal and one even strength goal. Willmar’s Alexander Cathcart allowed three goals on the 28 shots he faced.
New Ulm had four minor penalties called on Alex Nagel, Bennett Witta and Sam Storlie totaling eight penalty minutes and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Willmar had one minor penalty called on Riley Dixon for holding and went 1-for-4 on the power play.
