New Ulm was trailing Rochester 1-0, early in the first period. Rochester’s lead didn’t last long as New Ulm took off, scoring in every period.
New Ulm tied the game up at 1-1, with a goal from Alex Nagel on the power play. Steven Mordini had the puck at the blue line and bounced it off the boards to Ryan Smith. Smith passed the puck down to Nagel, who lifted the puck into the top corner of the net.
New Ulm scored two goals in the second period. Brandon Mehlhop gave New Ulm a 2-1 lead at the 6:48 mark. Mehlhop stole the puck in the neutral zone and passed it up to Nagel. Nagel entered the offensive zone as Mehlhop sped to the net to create a 2-on-1 rush. Mehlhop got the puck back from Nagel, dangled in front and slid the puck behind the goalie.
A 3-1 lead was obtained with seven seconds remaining in the second period. Nagel moved the puck into the slot from the point and passed to Kirk Coppock on the left. Coppock wristed the puck over the blocker and into the back of the net.
Reilly scored two goals for New Ulm in the third period. His first goal was scored on the power play at 6:44. He went coast-to-coast, flying by the opposition, and finishing it off with a backhand shot. Reilly and Mehlhop created a two-man breakaway for New Ulm’s sixth, and final goal at the 11:47 mark.
New Ulm and Rochester each totaled 14 penalty minutes on seven infractions. New Ulm went 2-for-7 on the power play and Rochester went 1-for-7.
