The New Ulm Steel had a one-goal lead over the Granite City Lumberjacks late in the game. Hunter Johnson took a slashing penalty with 1:17 on the clock to give Granite City a power play opportunity. It was a nail-biting finish, playing 6-on-4 hockey, with Granite City putting up 11 shots on goal in the final two minutes. Ryan Kenny made incredible saves to deny Granite City a tying goal and secure the win for New Ulm.
Trevor Woytcke scored both of New Ulm’s goals. Woytcke opened the scoring with helpers from Alex Nagel and Tom Reilly at 11:06 of the second period. Woytcke scored again in the third period at 3:48 after receiving a pass at the point from Jimmy Miller and carrying the puck to the net.
Brandon Bissett got Granite City on the board at the 15:16 mark of the third period with a redirected shot that went top shelf.
Kenny faced 31 shots and made 30 saves for New Ulm. Granite City’s goaltender, Ridge Gerads, stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced.
New Ulm totaled four penalty minutes on two infractions and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Granite City had a total of two penalty minutes on one infraction and went 0-for-2 on the power play.
