The New Ulm Steel racked up the points against the Rochester Ice Hawks with only three players lacking a single point. Drew Schenkenberg had a solid start in net, playing the first two periods and helping New Ulm get a 5-1 lead. Ben Colwell replaced Schenkenberg in net to start the third period and make his season debut. Colwell faced 11 shots and made 11 saves while the team scored four goals.
Nick Wieben scored two shorthanded, breakaway goals for New Ulm. Austin Langworthy also had a pair of goals, including the game’s first goal. Max Kjome made a spectacular pass immediatley after the faceoff to the right of Schenkenberg that traveled along the end boards and up the ice for Tom Reilly to catch it at the offensive zone circle. Reilly passed the puck back to Langworthy who quickly took a shot from the slot to open the scoring.
New Ulm totaled nine penalty minutes on three infractions and went 2-for-3 on the power play. Rochester had a total of 26 penalty minutes on four infractions and went 0-for-3 on the power play.
