The New Ulm Steel scored three goals in the first period against the Alexandria Blizzard. New Ulm was able to hold off Alexandria through the final 40 minutes, keeping the score at 3-1. Austin Langworthy netted an empty goal with 1:44 remaining to secure the, 4-1, win.
Ryan Smith opened the scoring, after receiving a pass from Langworthy behind the goal line, with a shot from the slot that went in blocker side at the 2:50 mark of the first period.
Kirk Coppock made the score 2-0 at 5:25 of the first period. Alexandria won the faceoff in New Ulm’s zone. Coppock immediately stole the puck and passed to Tom Reilly. Reilly carried the puck down the ice with Coppock following close behind. As Reilly approached the net, he had an Alexandria player closely defending his left side blocking his way to the net so Reilly made a backhand, centering pass that curved back to Coppock, who buried the puck.
Logan Nelson got Alexandria on the board with a power-play goal at 12:00 of the first period to make the score 2-1.
Luc Kreuser dropped to a knee and sniped the puck into the back of the net to widen the gap at the 14:42 mark of the first period.
New Ulm totaled 14 penalty minutes on seven infractions and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Alexandria had a total of 12 penalty minutes on six infractions and went 1-for-5 on the power play.
