Friday night, the New Ulm Steel lost to the Granite City Lumberjacks, 6-4. New Ulm had a huge 4-1 lead heading into the third period, but Granite City was able to net five goals in the final 20 minutes and complete a shocking comeback.
The following night, New Ulm took the ice in Alexandria with determination. New Ulm was in control and outshot the Alexandria Blizzard in the first two periods. After over 50 minutes of game time and a few quality scoring chances, the game stayed scoreless.
Hunter Johnson ended the game’s scoring drought and buried a power-play goal at the 11:08 mark of the third period.
Alexandria answered back with a goal from Dylan Giorgio less than two minutes later that tied the game up at 1-1.
James Spaargaren scored the eventual game-winning goal for New Ulm with just 2:27 remaining.
Jacob Halvorson extended the lead to 3-1 just 17 seconds later going top shelf with a wrist shot from the slot.
Henry Baribeau stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced for New Ulm. Alexandria’s goaltender, Ville Hyttinen, faced 30 shots and made 27 saves.
New Ulm totaled six penalty minutes on three infractions and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Alexandria had a total of six penalty minutes on three infractions and went 0-for-3 on the power play.
