The New Ulm Steel had a victorious weekend against the North Iowa Bulls, winning in overtime Friday night on home ice and taking a regulation win Saturday at North Iowa.
Both games had consistent back-and-forth scoring. The Bulls were the first ones on the board both nights, but the Steel answered right back and got the upper hand when it mattered most.
The Steel’s two regulation goals on Friday night were both scored with exactly 5:00 remaining on the scoreboard. Corey Stormer tied things up at 1-1 on the power play with a backdoor rocket in the second period and Keegan Bauman tied it up at 2-2 in the third period off a Jacob Halvorson rebound.
The game headed into overtime tied at 2-2. Teddy Lillico ended the game 26 seconds into overtime. His shot went five-hole, bounced off the post and over the goal line.
Saturday night’s game started in the same way. The Bulls took the lead in the first, but the Steel tied the game up at 1-1 in the second period, this time courtesy of Jack Parks.
Keegan Bauman’s hat trick was the star of Saturday’s game in North Iowa. Bauman’s first goal of the night was scored on the power play and gave the Steel their first lead on the weekend. The Steel held on to that 2-1 lead for most of the third period until Jordan Roo tied it up with 3:11 left to play.
Bauman struck again with a breakaway goal, also the game-winning goal, thanks to a beautiful up-ice pass from Halvorson. He completed his hat trick on an empty net with seven seconds left on the clock.
AJ Cohen was in net for the Steel both nights. He faced a total of 64 shots and made 60 saves.
Next weekend, the Steel play two home games. Friday night is against the Alexandria Blizzard and Saturday night they face off against the Willmar WarHawks.
