The New Ulm Steel got off to an early lead on Saturday and never looked back as they cruised to a 9-1 lead over Breezy Point North Stars.
Jacob Halvorson got the game going quickly, scoring 1:08 into the game, but the Steel didn’t stop there. After a quick one-goal lead, Stanislav Danaev put in his 11th goal of the season, just 43 seconds after Halvorson’s, for a 2-0 lead. Halvorson kept the scoring going with his second goal of the game 16:34 into the second period to put the Steel up 3-0 to end the first period.
The scoring didn’t stop in the first period as the Steel put up five more goals in the second period. Michael Savelkoul put in two and Parker Dorn added one within the first 10 minutes of the second period. Denis Denisov put in his second goal of the year to make it a 7-0 Steel lead.
Breezy Point answered with a goal with 36 seconds left in the second period to make it 7-1, but was quickly taken back by Jack Parks to end the second period with a 8-1 Steel lead.
Stanislav Danaev netted his second goal of the game in the third period to make it a 9-1 Steel lead with five and a half minutes left in the game.
For the Steel, Jack Raymond saved 15 in 16 opportunities as the Steel coasted to a 9-1 win on Saturday.
The Steel host the West Division-leading North Iowa Bulls on Friday, January 10 for a 7:10 p.m. puck drop.
