With the opening weekend behind them, the New Ulm Steel is prepared to take on the Alexandria Blizzard Friday, October 9 on home ice once again. The Steel has so much skill to work with this year, the players will find their roles on and off the ice and the chemistry will click.
Last weekend, the Willmar WarHawks came to town for a Friday night tilt. The Steel lost to the WarHawks, 4-1. Nick Wieben had the highlight goal, scoring short-handed in the first period to give the Steel an early lead. The Steel were unable to get another puck into the net, but they had a lot of great scoring chances that just needed to be capitalized on. The WarHawks brought an impressive team to New Ulm and exciting hockey will be played whenever these two teams meet.
Saturday night, the Alexandria Blizzard beat the Steel, 5-3. After the first two periods the score was 3-1, with Marcus Mack scoring the goal for the Steel. The Blizzard struck first in the third period, extending their lead to 4-1. Nick Wieben cut their lead in half with 7:49 remaining. Corey Stormer got the Steel within one, but when Zac Hattan was pulled for the extra attacker with one minute left, the Blizzard scored on the empty net within 12 seconds.
Friday night’s game against the Alexandria BLizzard starts at 7:10 p.m. The doors open and tickets go on sale at 6:30 p.m. The first 250 fans will be allowed in. The bleachers will be marked for social distancing and we ask you follow the guidelines posted throughout the rink.
