The last week in January started on a high note on Wednesday with a win over the Granite City Lumberjacks, 3-2. The first period ended with an even 1-1, with the Steels’ first goal by Tommy Michelsen. The Steel took an early lead in the second as James Spaargaren assisted by Nate Looft and Joey Gimberlin scored only 55 seconds into the period. This goal was answered by the Lumberjacks. Hutson Collins had the game-winning goal assisted by Nate Looft midway into the third period.
Friday night, the Steel suffered a tough loss to the North Iowa Bulls on the road. Jake Saver answered the Bulls’ first goal to tie the game late in the first (assisted by Bauer Barry and Tommy Broten) which was quickly reversed by another Bulls goal. The second period started off rough as the Bulls made it 4-1 early. Zach Mailette returned with a goal at 4:18 (assisted by Joey Gimberlin. The team took on a couple of penalties in the second and again in the third. Bulls took the game 10-2.
Saturday night, the Steel finished their road trip in Willmar against the WarHawks. The first period started off a bit rocky as Spaargaren took a penalty and the WarHawks went up 2-0. Joey Gimberlin assisted by Jake Saver put the Steel on the board late into the first. Bauer Barry scored his first goal of the season at 18:56 in the second (assisted by James Spaargaren and Nate Looft), but ultimately the WarHawks took the game.
This week, the Steel are home on Wednesday against the Granite City Lumberjacks starting at 7:10. The doors open and tickets go on sale at 6:40 p.m. The first 150 fans will be allowed in due to COVID restrictions. The bleachers will be marked for social distancing and we ask you follow the guidelines posted throughout the rink.
