Saturday night the Steel took on the Alexandria Blizzard. The pace of the game was there, though there were not many goals or penalties. The first period ended with the Blizzard up 1-0. With 20 seconds left in the 3rd period, James Spaargaren put us on the board after Griffen Foster was pulled to put 6 skaters on the ice. Joey Gimberlin took the assist. Ultimately, the Blizzard scored in overtime taking the game 2-1. Each period consisted of only one penalty. Griffin Foster was solid in net all night long as he went 39/41 on shots saved.
Sunday, the Steel took on the North Iowa Bulls on home ice. The first period had a lot of action! Scoring for the Steel started out with Jake Saver putting up his second of the season assisted by Nate Looft and Joey Gimberlin. Gimberlin then scored an unassisted goal at 15:01 — his seventh of the season; rounding out the period, Josh DeLange scored his first of the season at 18:50. North Iowa put up 2 goals in the first period. The second was just as eventful as the first as both teams put up 3 goals. Scoring for the Steel at 13:44 was Nate Looft with his second of the season assisted by James Spaargaren and Corey Stormer on the power play. Then at 16:35 and 16:52 we put up back-to-back goals as Josh DeLange got his 2nd of the season and the game, assisted by Zach Maillette and James Spaargaren; Spaargaren then turned around and put up his 14th of the season, assisted by DeLange. Third period only consisted of one penalty put up by the Bulls. Griffin Foster put up 37 saves for the game. The Steel earned a well-deserved win, ending the weekend with 3/4 points.
This coming week the Steel go on the road for 3 consecutive games on Friday against the Willmar WarHawks, Saturday against the Alexandria Blizzard, and Sunday against the Granite City Lumberjacks.
