Wednesday night, the Steel started off their 3 game week on the road against the Alexandria Blizzard. The first period featured a lot of action between goals put up by both teams. The Blizzard started off with 2 quick goals which were followed by a goal by Steel’s Josh DeLange putting up his 3rd of the season, assisted by Noah Rauschenberger and James Spaargaren. Alexandria responded quickly with a third goal less than a minute later. Later in the first Jacob Zowin scored his second of the season on the power play with assists to Joey Gimberlin and Zach Maillette. The first period ultimately ended with a 4th goal by the Blizzard on the power play as Harrison Albrecht sat for tripping. The second period started off with a tripping minor for Teddy Lillico and then proceeded on with another goal later in the second by Alexandria. We then ended the period with another penalty on the Steel as Ryler Schelle pulled a high-sticking minor. Each team then put up goals in the third period. James Spaargaren with his 15th of the season; assisted by Parker Dorn. The game ended with a loss of 6-3 against the Blizzard.
Friday night was tough for the Steel as they faced off against the Willmar WarHawks. In the first period, Willmar put 2 goals on the board, along with 2 penalities. Park Dorn sat late in the period on a roughing minor as well. The second period was eventful as Willmar put up 2 more goals, followed by a Steel goal. Ryler Schelle put up his first of the season; assists to James Spaargaren and Zach Maillette. Nate Looft pulled a 2-minute fighting minor later in the 2nd. The third period featured a couple of Steel penalties in the first half of the period; one to Noah Rauschenberger and the other to Joey Gimberlin each for slashing. Willmar put up 2 more goals between the 10 and 15-minute mark in the third. The game ended with another fight at 19:46; Harrison Albrecht taking on Jack Willis. Albrecht getting a 10 and 20 for unsportsmanlike conduct and fighting.
The Steel ended the weekend on Sunday night against the Granite City Lumberjacks. Granite City put up two goals in the first half of the first. Nate Looft put up his 3rd of the season only 34 seconds after Granite’s second goal; assists to Noah Rauschenberger and Joey Gimberlin. In the second period, Granite put up 2 more goals before the Steel changed goalies. They then came up with another goal. Looft then put up a penalty for roughing in the 2nd, followed by a power-play for the Steel. Zach Maillette scored on the power play, his eighth of the season, assisted by Teddy Lillico and Joey Gimberlin. The third period resulted in a tough loss after the Lumberjacks scored 2 more goals; a final score of 7-2.
The Steel return home for 3 home games on March 12, 13, and 14th. 250 fans are allowed to attend and cheer on the Steel. Masks are required unless eating or drinking and benched are marked off for social distancing.
