Weekly Update: March 8th – 14th

A three-day weekend of back-to-back games is complete. Friday and Saturday night, the North Iowa Bulls were in town as we played our last two regular-season games against their club.

Friday night’s game was started out with a goal in the first period by Zach Maillette, his 9th of the season. He was assisted by Jake Saver and Harrison Albrecht. We continued to hold the lead at the end of the second period after answering a goal by the Bulls. Late in the second period, Jacob Zowin got his 3rd goal this season; assists went to Nate Looft and James Spaargaren. The third period was a fight as the Bulls scored two on us within the first 10 minutes of the period. We fought to come back but just could not put another shot in the net. Game end was 3-2 Bulls.

Saturday night’s game wasn’t our best, but not our worst against the Bulls club. North Iowa put 4 goals in the net, ending the night 4-0. Each team pulled 2 penalties during the game.

On Sunday, the Willmar WarHawks came to town. The first period started slow after an injury occurred and the Steel had to change lines up to accommodate being down a forward. Late in the 1st period, the Hawks scored which was quickly answered by the Steels James Spaargaren (16), assists to Joey Gimberlin and Teddy Lillico. The Steel came out running in the second period. James Spaargaren put up his second of the night, 17th of the season, as the team was on the penalty kill after Nate Looft got a roughing minor. Bauer Barry and Parker Dorn each got their 9th assist of the season on Spaargarens goal. Shortly after, Zach Maillette scored on the power play, assisted by Joey Gimberlin and Tommy Michelsen. The third period started out rough as the Hawks quickly put up 2 more goals making it a tie game. Neither team could pull off another goal resulting in 3-on-3 overtime. Halfway through overtime, the WarHawks got the puck past Griffin Foster and took the win for the night.

Overall, the Steel fought hard and skated with both teams they faced this weekend. The Steel have a busy week ahead as they play four games; 2 home and 2 away. Wednesday they head to face the Granite City Lumberjacks, Friday they face the WarHawks for redemption in Willmar, then they return home on Saturday, March 20th at 7:10 pm to face the Alexandria Blizzard, and then end the week on Sunday, March 21st against the Lumberjacks again at 3:00 pm.
